Derby chaos in Mannheim prompts DFB to launch incident probe
As the final whistle blew at the Carl‑Benz‑Stadion, a wave of SV Mannheim supporters surged onto the pitch, turning the DFB Cup tie against 1. FC Kaiserslautern into a chaotic scene that left 85 people injured and forced officials to halt play.
DFB announces comprehensive review
The German Football Association posted on Instagram that it will evaluate all reports, forward them to the responsible committees and conduct a thorough analysis of the incidents. The statement emphasized that there is no place for unsafe behaviour in football.
Club officials describe the trigger
Mannheim sport director speaking to Sky said, "After the huddle formation at the corner, which we tried to de‑escalate, rockets from the Lautern‑Block were fired into our main stand. I believe that was the trigger for the interruption." He added that the situation escalated after the huddle on the field.
Escalation on the field and in the stands
Following a goalless 90 minutes, a group of players gathered on the turf while some 1. FC Kaiserslautern fans launched fireworks into the seating area. The resulting chaos prompted Mannheimer fans to storm the pitch, creating scenes of disorder that threatened the continuation of the match.
Mounted police units, including officers on horseback, intervened to restore order and prevent the game from being abandoned. Their presence helped calm the crowd and allowed officials to regain control of the stadium.
Condemnations from both clubs and politicians
FC Kaiserslautern sports business manager Thomas Hengen said, "It was a derby; the fight should stay on the field. What happened in the stands was beyond that." Interior minister Manuel Hagel called the events "not a normal derby" and warned that anyone who turns football into a stage for violent excesses will be treated as a criminal.
Both clubs and authorities issued strong condemnations, and a search for cause has begun. The DFB’s commitment to a comprehensive investigation underscores the seriousness with which it views the safety of fans and officials.
