Demichelis criticises his own path after Leverkusen defeat

After a disappointing 0-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, coach Martín Demichelis at RB Leipzig showed no hesitation in being self‑critical and questioning his own performance as well as the path taken. He emphasized that the first minutes had been promising, while the second half saw the team let chances slip by.

Leipzig started strongly, putting the visitors under early pressure and dominating the opening phase. Shortly before halftime, Patrik Schick put the hosts ahead, and after the break Miguel Gutiérrez increased the lead to 2‑0. Despite greater ball possession after the second goal, Leipzig struggled to create dangerous situations.

Demichelis said after the match: “If a coach loses, he is never right.” He added: “The first 15 minutes was a very good performance by the team.” The Argentine coach was annoyed that his side had played well up to the first concession, and admitted that after the second strike the attacking power had waned.

Self‑criticism and Outlook

Another setback was the injury to Brajan Gruda, a potential DFB debutant. Demichelis saw the upcoming international break as both an opportunity and a problem: “It is a shame, we have three weeks without the whole squad.” Part of the roster will be with the national teams.

After the national players return, the coach wants to resume preparation for the next tasks quickly. He emphasized that an intensive period with numerous matches lies ahead and that the defeat in Leverkusen must be thoroughly analysed.

The contrast between the disappointing performance and Demichelis' open self‑criticism highlights that the coach uses the current situation as a learning opportunity, while also keeping an eye on the team's structural problems.
