Dehydration revealed: Kos Karetsas leaves the hospital

Borussia Dortmund's Greek midfielder, Konstantinos Karetsas, twenty years old, left the hospital on Friday after examinations identified dehydration as the cause of his circulatory problems that occurred during the Champions League match against Villarreal on Tuesday, September 8.

He collapsed in the 24th minute, was carried on a stretcher with no apparent contact, then taken to the hospital twenty‑five minutes later for thorough examinations.

Diagnosis and Management

The club's initial diagnosis mentioned “circulatory problems”, which led Dortmund to announce that the player had to remain under medical observation. The youngster's mother, Irena Kitsinis, clarified that the early results indicated dehydration due to insufficient water intake combined with intense effort.

"Borussia Dortmund's Greek midfielder"

“The blood circulation problems were due to dehydration,” said Irena Kitsinis. “Kos was able to leave the hospital, which is a great relief. At the club, they are exercising great caution and want to do everything possible, through various examinations, to rule out any hypothesis,” she added, before concluding: “He is fine.”

Gilles Joinau, editor for DH and S+, published the account of this incident on 11‑09‑2026 at 08:45, reminding that the match was part of the UEFA Champions League phase, matchday 1.

Planned Return to the Pitch

The club hopes to see Dortmund's Greek return quickly. The Saturday match against Paderborn comes too soon, but it is confirmed that he will be present on Sunday in Genk for the KRC Genk‑KAA Gent clash, as his mother indicated.

In the meantime, Dortmund continues to monitor his condition closely, while preparing for the upcoming Champions League and German league fixtures.
