Defoe's sudden exit throws Woking into scramble before season
Jermain Defoe walked out on Woking two weeks before the new National League season begins, calling his brief spell an “eye‑opening experience”. The former England striker’s immediate departure leaves the Surrey club scrambling ahead of its opening match against Sutton United.
Defoe was appointed by the Surrey side in March, stepping in as a surprise replacement for Neal Ardley. His arrival was hailed as a high‑profile coup for the non‑league outfit.
During his short tenure he guided Woking to a 10th‑place finish, winning two of the six league matches he oversaw. The modest points tally reflected the limited time he had to implement his ideas.
Defoe oversaw a 1‑0 friendly defeat to Braintree Town on Tuesday, his only match in charge of the side’s preseason fixtures. The loss highlighted the challenges of preparing a squad without a permanent manager.
The resignation came a fortnight before Woking were due to begin the campaign, with the club confirming the abrupt decision and leaving the coaching staff to regroup ahead of the Sutton United clash. The timing leaves the club with a narrow window to find a replacement before the season opener.
“Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position,” Defoe wrote on social media. He added that he was “extremely proud of the work undertaken during my time at the club and genuinely felt that we were building something special.” He described his tenure as “an eye‑opening managerial experience” that would make him stronger for his next challenge.
The 43‑year‑old former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United forward has 20 goals in 57 England caps and 162 Premier League appearances, adding a notable dimension to Woking’s coaching roster. His résumé brought considerable experience to a club operating outside the professional tiers.
Woking issued a statement thanking Defoe for his contribution, affirming the club remains fully focused on delivering its objectives on and off the pitch and expressing gratitude to supporters. The statement emphasized that the team’s ambitions remain unchanged despite the sudden change.
