Defence depth pushes Zulte Waregem to rethink Anton Tanghe’s future

Zulte Waregem and defender Anton Tanghe agreed to terminate their contract earlier this month, even though the agreement was still in force. The club, often referred to as Essevee, cited a reshuffle of a defence already stocked with three right‑footed centre‑backs and a wave of academy talent.

Defensive surplus drives decision

Sporting manager Niels Leroy told the West‑Vlaanderen newspaper that the split was not the result of a conflict or a sporting settlement with Tanghe. He highlighted that Zulte Waregem already has Lemoine, Dejaegere and Sall as three right‑footed central defenders, making the back line crowded and limiting opportunities for existing players.

Moreover, several youngsters from the club’s own academy are poised to claim first‑team minutes, meaning Tanghe would have slipped further down the pecking order. The defender had previously held a key role and even wore the captain’s armband, making the development striking and underscoring the shift in his status.

Leroy stressed that the decision should not be read as an assessment of Tanghe’s abilities. On the contrary, he said Zulte Waregem retains a distinctly positive view of the defender’s contribution.

Mutual exit leaves door open for future

"We are grateful to Anton for everything he has given to the club. To this day he shows a fantastic mentality," Leroy said.

Following the mutual termination, Tanghe was permitted to remain at Zulte Waregem to continue his conditioning and complete his rehabilitation, giving him the chance to ready himself for the next phase of his career.

Leroy added that any team signing Anton will always value a player with such a professional attitude.

The move, viewed through the lens of limited playing time and intense competition for his position, appears logical for all parties rather than enduring a season of scarce involvement.
