Deco says Barcelona’s Alvarez target fell after Inter shut Lautaro

Deco confirmed that Barcelona evaluated Argentine striker Lautaro Martínez as a high‑level option while their primary focus remained on Julián Alvarez, but a direct enquiry to Internazionale was rebuffed, ending any further pursuit.

Barcelona’s offensive reshuffle

The Catalan club entered the latest transfer window looking to revamp its attack. Alvarez was identified as the priority target, yet difficulties with Atlético Madrid forced the hierarchy to explore alternatives.

In that context, Lautaro Martínez emerged as one of the main candidates, prompting Barcelona to approach Internazionale for clarification on his availability.

Inter’s firm stance

Deco explained that Barcelona first contacted Inter’s management to gauge any margin for negotiation. “Lautaro is an Inter icon, a fantastic and spectacular captain,” he said, adding that the club was told the player was not for sale.

Following that response, Barcelona’s president ceased all contact, respecting Inter’s decision and never approached the player or his agent again.

Deco reiterated that Lautaro was indeed among the forwards considered, describing him as a player the club liked greatly.

The Argentine, who captains Inter and is contracted until 2029, recently affirmed his desire to stay in Milan, confirming the club’s position.
