Deco explains why Barcelona rejected Rashford for Gordon
Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, said in a lengthy interview given to the microphones of RAC‑1 that the club preferred Gordon over Marcus Rashford, considering the former more in line with the Barça philosophy, and explained why it gave up the buy‑out option.
Adeyemi and Roony's injury
Deco clarified that the Catalan club had already pursued Adeyemi and that the deal was concluded immediately, without waiting for the next season. “We could have finalized the Adeyemi deal next season, but we did it now, and it’s a shame that Roony got injured because we wanted him on loan,” he said. The executive added that the decision was made to ensure offensive continuity.
Regarding Rashford, Deco emphasized appreciation for the player’s contribution during his time at the club. “We are grateful for what he has brought, but Gordon fit the club’s philosophy better,” he stated, highlighting the tactical preference.
The case of Gabriel Jesus was handled with the same transparency: “We were not aware of this option and, in the end, it turned out to be advantageous,” Deco explained, indicating that the choice was made without preliminary negotiations.
The Bernardo Silva case
Deco then spoke about the long‑standing interest in Bernardo Silva, pursued in the summer but then signed for Real Madrid. “It wasn’t the position we were looking for, given his profile. I love him, he is Portuguese and has been one of the best players in the world in recent years,” he commented.
He added that, despite Silva’s desire to come to Barça, the transfer did not fit the club’s financial criteria. “We told him that if he wanted to come, he had to take that into account. Promises of playing time? We will never make those,” he concluded.
Deco reiterated that Barcelona will give the coach what he needs, but if a player demands different conditions, the club will let him go. The executive concluded by stating that the club will continue to pursue players who reflect Barça’s philosophy.
