Deco definitively blocks Julián Álvarez's transfer

FC Barcelona has, according to technical director Deco, announced that the club will take no further steps to acquire the Argentine striker Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid. The 26‑year‑old forward is therefore officially ‘past’ for the Spanish club.

Summer attempts and anger in Madrid

Barça made frantic attempts in the summer to pry Álvarez away from Atlético Madrid, but the actions mainly provoked anger in the Spanish capital. The club made an offer, but Atlético remained steadfast. Ultimately the transfer remained unfinished.

Deco told Diario AS: “Julián is past, we must look ahead.” He thereby gave a definitive signal regarding the Argentine attacker.

According to Deco, Julián’s situation has nothing to do with Raphinha’s form as a number nine. He recalled the departure of Robert Lewandowski, who he said was the best striker. Deco explained that Barcelona has always been looking for a mobile striker who could combine well, and that Álvarez seemed to fit that profile, but the deal did not go through.

Barça also showed interest in Inter icon and captain Lautaro Martínez. Deco said that, out of respect for the player and his club, the negotiations were halted when it became clear that he was not available.

Gabriel Jesus as new signing

Instead of an Argentine striker, Barcelona ultimately brought in a Brazilian: Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian, who played few matches at Arsenal, now gets the chance to prove himself.

Deco praised Jesus: “I think he is a top player. He didn’t play many matches at Arsenal, but a new club and new teammates often provide extra motivation.” He emphasized that this motivation is crucial for his development.
