Debate over Kylian Mbappé, Ballon d’Or favorite and Latour's target

Debate over Kylian Mbappé, Ballon d’Or favorite and Latour's target

One year after Ousmane Dembélé's victory, the debate heats up around the next Ballon d’Or: Kylian Mbappé, PSG striker, is among the favorites despite the club's recent Champions League triumph, while several analysts deem him an unworthy candidate.

Favorites and expectations

If the Parisian striker must settle for an honorary place, he remains one of the main contenders to succeed the former Barcelona player. He shares the imaginary podium with Harry Kane and prodigy Lamine Yamal. PSG, reigning Champions League champion, boosts the player's visibility.

For some observers, the Bondynian, who will be present at the ceremony held at the London Palladium, even appears as the best placed to lift the trophy. The presence in London underscores the international importance of the award.

Supporters' voices

Streamer Zach Nani said he had spoken with “rather well‑informed” people and added that “they’re starting to get the feeling that this is the direction we’re heading”. This remark fuels rumors of a possible coronation.

However, journalist Bertrand Latour reacted vehemently on the Canal Football Club set‑up Sunday evening. He called the possible award “the Ballon d’Or of shame”, denouncing a vote for a player who has won nothing this season.

Latour’s prediction

Latour believes the winner should be Harry Kane, followed by Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembélé. He puts Kylian Mbappé in sixth place, behind Rodri and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, far from the podium.

This stance is not new. A recurring critique from Latour, known for his sharp remarks, already attacked Mbappé during PSG’s trip to Brest in October 2023, calling the goal celebration “a France captain should not do that”.

Tactical analysis

From a footballing perspective, the commentator highlighted a deficit in defensive work rate, stating: “When your star player makes no effort without the ball, you’re essentially playing with ten men in defense.” He also criticised the player’s repositioning on the axis, arguing that “as a number nine, he loses the essence of his spontaneity.”

Thus, the Ballon d’Or ceremony, which will be held at the London Palladium, is set to reflect a clear split between supporters of a Mbappé coronation and detractors who deem him unworthy. The debate highlights the tension between collective performances and individual prestige.
