Deadline pressure forces Roma to weigh United’s interest in Koné

Manchester United are monitoring French midfielder Manu Koné as Serie A side Roma rush to complete his transfer before the 31 July deadline, while the player will not return from his post‑tournament break until 10 August. The timing pits the Premier League giant against the Italian club at a critical moment for both sides.

Roma must finalise a sale by 31 July to satisfy the terms of their UEFA settlement agreement, a deadline that shapes every decision the club makes this summer.

Manchester United monitor Koné closely, but United have identified a lack of pace as a concern, and despite laying groundwork, no formal bid has materialised.

Koné is on his post‑tournament break after France’s semi‑final exit and will not be back until 10 August; by then Roma will already have returned from their training camp in Wales.

Other returning players are already filtering back into Gian Piero Gasperini’s plans; Neil El Aynaoui, despite interest from several Premier League clubs, is still expected to report on 30 July and travel with the squad to Wales. Salah‑Eddine is expected to stay behind from the Wales camp and train at Fulvio Bernardini while the club looks for a buyer.

Corriere Dello Sport notes Roma are still awaiting a formal move for the French midfielder, and waiting is not ideal as deadlines close in.

Our View stresses that Roma require clarity quickly, because the finances and timing are far tighter than United appear to appreciate.

With Koné not returning until after the 31 July cut‑off, United face the obstacle of securing the player post‑deadline, while Roma must decide whether to extend the deal window or accept the loss of a potential transfer fee.
