De Roon earns first start as Roma rely on experience against Como
Marten de Roon will make his first start for the Giallorossi tomorrow as Roma travel to face Como. The Dutchman steps into the midfield after Bryan Cristante’s injury forced a reshuffle, and coach Gian Piero Gasperini has chosen to hand the reins to the experienced midfielder.
Injury opens the door
Cristante’s absence creates space for de Roon to join the starting eleven. De Roon will be expected to carry on Cristante’s legacy, providing order and substance alongside centre‑back Bryan Koné.
The recent international break worked in de Roon’s favour. Unburdened by national team duties, he was able to train continuously at Trigoria, following a programme of physical work and tactical drills set by Gasperini.
Gasperini has long valued de Roon’s experience, having taken him to the capital earlier in the season. Now the coach is ready to reward that trust with a starting spot in a match that will test the Giallorossi midfield against a determined Como side.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the midfielder used the break to regain fitness and prepare for the opportunity he has awaited since joining Roma.
Tomorrow there will be no more waiting; de Roon will take the field and Gasperini will see one of his trusted players back in the starting line‑up.
