De Bruyne meets 'typical Dutchman' Mark van Bommel

Kevin De Bruyne explained during a press conference that he, despite initial doubts about a new era with the Red Devils, has chosen to continue under the new national team coach Mark van Bommel and retain his place in the Nations League squad.

De Bruyne admitted that he did not know Van Bommel well. ‘I didn’t know him very well,’ he said, then explained that he has already had several conversations with the 35-year-old coach.

Continuing role in the Nations League

There was doubt whether the 35-year-old De Bruyne wanted to start a new chapter with the Red Devils, but the Napoli midfielder remains in the Nations League squad. ‘Van Bommel asked me what I wanted to do. Many players asked me to stay. They gave me energy. I am here to help the young players, but also to keep playing,’ he explained.

A ‘typical Dutchman’ in the coach’s seat

De Bruyne described Van Bommel as a ‘typical Dutchman’, fairly direct in his manner. ‘It will soon become clear how the coach wants to play. If you work on a project, you also work on a certain philosophy. But everything also depends on results,’ said the Belgian star.

He did not consider the route of Thibaut Courtois to the Euro. ‘No, I did not consider that, because I feel good. That’s why I want to continue in this way. It is not an issue for me,’ De Bruyne stated. He added that his level is still good, he has played ninety minutes in three consecutive matches and feels fit and sharp after the summer break.

After two training sessions under Van Bommel, De Bruyne has a clearer picture of the coach. He now has 124 caps for Belgium and wants to focus on guiding young talent, but continues to earn minutes himself. ‘Various players have asked me to stay and I am here to help the youngsters, but at the same time I still want to play,’ he emphasized.

The combination of a direct coach, a solid fitness base and the desire to remain both mentor and player underscores De Bruyne’s decision to stay with the Red Devils, despite the uncertainty that a new era brings.
