David Raum condemns bitter Champions League flop after Como

In the picturesque setting of Lake Como, the dark expression of DFB professional David Raum was evident when RB Leipzig suffered a bitter Champions League blow after a 4-1 defeat to rising side Como 1907. In front of around 900 travelling RB fans, the captain had to swallow the bitter loss and later find unmistakable words.

Tragic match in Como

The match started with an early goal by Martin Baturina in the 15th minute, followed by a goal from Tasos Douvikas in the 38th minute. Assane Diao added another in the 54th minute, while Maximo Perrone sealed the result at 4-1 in the 90th minute. RB Leipzig's only goal came from Andrija Maksimovic in the 58th minute, a consolation goal that did not change the outcome. The stadium of Como 1907 holds 11,000 seats and had been sold out for weeks, with club president Mirwan Suwarso and other executives giving their seats to 70 fans born in 1950 or earlier. The setting was picturesque, but the match was a nightmare for the visitors from Leipzig.

Around 900 RB fans traveled with the team to Como to support the match, and were personally thanked by Raum after the defeat. The grateful fans were praised by Raum for their support.

Raum's clear words and coach reaction

After the match, captain David Raum spoke up and said: “It feels really crappy right now. We got a proper beating today.” A statement from the captain that reflected the whole team's disappointment.

The 28-year-old international also pointed out that the team must react quickly, after having already suffered a 1-3 defeat to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga last weekend. The loss to Werder Bremen had already raised doubts about the new leadership.

Coach Martin Demichelis, who had only recently taken charge, confirmed the tough day and said: “The opponent was much better than us. It’s hard to find good things when you lose 1-4 in the Champions League.” In his analysis he emphasized that the review must be not only tactical but also mental.

The early pressure on the Argentine coach is mounting, as in the last Champions League campaign Leipzig remained winless after the first matchday and finished with only one win out of eight games. This leaves the question open whether Leipzig can achieve the much‑needed turnaround in the upcoming matches.
