Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg to join his family

As football seemed to be regaining momentum since its collapse in June, the Danish midfielder chose to terminate his contract with Wolfsburg in order to stay close to his loved ones. Christian Eriksen, 34, requested the termination of an agreement that was set to run until June 2027, and the German club confirmed his departure on Wednesday, September 23.

A mutual agreement after a cardiac issue

The Dane suffered another cardiac problem during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine on June 7, an incident that recalled his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. Equipped with an implantable defibrillator, he said the device functioned as intended and that he felt fine, but he chose to return home to follow a rehabilitation programme.

Wolfsburg accepted his request without trying to retain him, sporting director Dieter Hecking stating that the club wanted to let Eriksen decide his future. The midfielder therefore thanked his teammates and the fans, confirming that his priority was to stay close to his family.

Statistics and outlook

Arriving on a free transfer in September 2025, Eriksen played 34 matches in all competitions for Wolfsburg, scoring three goals and providing ten assists, according to the club’s published record. He will not take part in the club’s push for promotion in the Bundesliga.

Since his departure, the player has not announced whether he will resume competition or end his career, leaving his future open. The club, for its part, continues its fight to avoid relegation without the experienced midfielder.
