Damning Kyle Walker decision fuels Burnley's Championship crisis

Burnley have confirmed that club captain Kyle Walker will not feature in their final Championship fixture, a move that underlines a disastrous start to the season and leaves manager Nicky Hayden under intense scrutiny. The decision follows a 1-1 home draw against Derby County last weekend and reflects the club’s desperate search for any spark.

Walker’s season under fire

Kyle Walker, the former England international, is in his second season with the Clarets, who sit bottom of the Championship after eight games. He has been deployed mainly as a centre‑back, a position he has struggled in since a 3-1 defeat at Swansea in September.

Joe Redmond, speaking on the Turfcast Podcast, argued that Walker “has been a massive part of the problem” and deserved to be dropped. Redmond backed the club’s choice not to start the captain in the Derby match, describing his performances as “poor” and noting that he has been played out of position.

Club’s wider defensive woes

Burnley have drawn four and lost four, conceding a late equaliser to the Rams in the most recent game and remaining the only side in the division without a win. They sit three points off safety and nine points off the eighth‑place play‑off spot.

Redmond also highlighted goalkeeper Max Weiss’s “absolute howler” against Swansea as another factor in the defensive frailties. He added that the club’s poor start has been characterised by numerous defensive errors, a sentiment echoed by manager Nicky Hayden.

Hayden, aware of growing fan frustration, admitted he is unsure how long he will remain in charge. He promised to fight on, insisting the squad can turn things around in the next three weeks, before a crucial clash with fellow strugglers Watford.

Despite the bleak outlook, Hayden plans a warm‑weather training camp to give players a brief respite, even though eight Burnley players are on international duty. Getty images captured the tense atmosphere at Turf Moor as the club prepares for its final league game.
