Daizen Maeda: A statement signing ahead of the Premier League season

Under the floodlights at Portman Road, a sea of amber and navy watches as Daizen Maeda steps onto the pitch for the first time, embodying a statement signing ahead of the Premier League season. The Japan international has completed his move to Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town, marking a clear ambition to play English football at the highest level.

Daizen Maeda’s departure from Celtic has felt inevitable at various points over the last 12 months, yet the challenge of replacing him remains daunting for the Scottish club. Celtic lose a player whose 79 goals in 212 appearances helped secure five Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

For Ipswich, the acquisition represents far more than an additional attacking option. Gary O’Neil, the club’s manager, has secured a player entering the peak years of his career, praised for an elite work ethic, proven goalscoring pedigree and extensive experience in big‑match situations.

“We’re very pleased to have Daizen join the club,” O’Neil said. “He works extremely hard and has impressive physical attributes, while also proving over a number of years playing in Scotland that he has the ability to score goals and create for his team.” The manager believes Maeda’s profile fits perfectly with his tactical plans for the Premier League.

Maeda’s influence at Celtic extended beyond statistics. Over recent seasons, the 28‑year‑old became the heartbeat of Celtic’s pressing game, known for relentless running, chasing lost causes and forcing defenders into mistakes. His movement and defensive work from the front set the tone for a side that dominated Scottish football.

His finest individual campaign arrived in 2024/25 when he scored 33 goals in all competitions and was crowned PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year. Those numbers underline his ability to deliver consistently at the highest domestic level.

He ended his Celtic career in outstanding form, netting nine goals in his final seven appearances, including a stunning overhead kick against Rangers and the decisive goal in the dramatic title‑clinching victory over Hearts. Those moments ensured he left as one of the club’s modern‑day heroes.

“I am very proud to sign for Ipswich Town,” Maeda said after completing the transfer. “I have always dreamed of playing in the Premier League and I am very happy I can realise that dream with this club. My aim will always be to battle hard, score goals, and provide assists for my team.” His arrival in Suffolk brings a player accustomed to pressure, offering Ipswich supporters a blend of energy, professionalism and goalscoring instinct that could shape their Premier League fortunes, while Celtic now face the task of filling a void that goes beyond numbers.
