D-Day at De Bosuil: Antwerp faces decisive financial showdown

🇧🇪 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·
Under the low‑light of De Bosuil, the boardroom buzzes as a D‑Day deadline looms for Paul Gheysens and his team. Vindt Gheysens the necessary cash to keep Antwerp, or will a sale become inevitable? The clock ticks after a missed midnight deadline, while a €35 million loan from a British fund still hangs over the club. Foto: © photonews NIEUW Ontvang meldingen bij belangrijk nieuws! It was early this year that Royal Antwerp FC finally released its long‑awaited annual accounts, ending a period of uncertainty for the historic side. The documents shed light on the club’s current standing and hinted at what may lie ahead for The Great Old. The loss for the season was limited to a “dick half‑million euro”, a stark improvement on the twelve‑million‑euro deficit recorded the year before. Those figures illustrate a modest turnaround in the club’s finances. Nevertheless, Antwerp continues to hunt for extra investors, a need amplified by persistent cash‑flow pressures on Paul Gheysens and his construction firm Ghelamco. The search underscores the fragile financial foundation of the club. “Er zijn verkennende gesprekken opgestart met potentiële nieuwe investeerders. Die gesprekken hebben als doel bijkomende middelen ter beschikking stellen die de continuïteit van de vennootschap kunnen waarborgen,” the club report reads, signalling proactive outreach. The British leveraged fund Fasanara supplied a €35 million loan two years ago to Goala, the private company in which Paul Gheysens and his son Michael sit on the board and through which he acquired the club’s primary shares. In return, Fasanara secured the club’s shares as collateral. Normally €10 million of that loan was due on 30 June, but Gheysens and his colleagues obtained a short extension. A new deadline set for Tuesday at midnight also lapsed, prompting another request for more time. According to the Gazet van Antwerpen, “Er moeten nog details uitgeklaard worden, akkoord pas ten vroegste woensdag.” The newspaper adds that a principle agreement is expected on Wednesday and that the Vandenhaute‑Alderweireld consortium appears to have clinched the deal. Readers are invited to sign up for the Voetbalkrant newsletter. The outcome of this decisive day will determine whether Antwerp can retain its independence or face a change of ownership, a turning point for the club’s future.
