Cuti Romero bids farewell to Tottenham with heartfelt letter
Cristian Romero announced his departure from Tottenham Hotspur with an open letter on Instagram after five seasons in the Premier League, celebrating the UEFA Europa League 2024/25 triumph that ended a 41‑year international drought and confirming his move to Atlético Madrid, his first club in España.
Letter reveals emotional farewell
The post, signed “Cuti”, was shared on his personal Instagram account and reached almost seven million followers, sparking an outpouring of gratitude from Spurs supporters.
Transfer details and future
Romero first arrived at Tottenham Hotspur in mid‑2021 on loan from Atalanta before the London side paid €50 million (USD 57 million) to secure his permanent transfer.
During his spell he featured in 156 matches, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists, and captained the side as a leader on and off the pitch.
Journalists Gastón Edul and Fabrizio Romano reported that the deal with Atlético Madrid includes a €40 million package, bonuses included, and that Romero will now work under Diego Simeone.
Romero had previously expressed a desire to play in La Liga, saying to that “Me encantaría jugar en La Liga.” That wish was realised as the transfer was completed, despite an offer from Inter Milan of €35 million plus €5 million in bonuses that did not materialise.
Before joining Tottenham, the Argentine defender featured for Genoa, Atalanta and Juventus (where he did not add minutes) and began his career at Belgrano de Córdoba.
He missed the final stretch of his last season with a right‑knee lateral ligament injury, yet Tottenham avoided relegation by beating Everton on the final day. The injury raised doubts about his World Cup participation, but he later featured in the runner‑up side that lost to Spain in New Jersey.
