Cunha saves United from defeat after Martínez's own goal
On Sunday evening at Craven Cottage, a deflected shot from Matheus Cunha provided the equaliser for Manchester United against Fulham, after Lisandro Martínez had scored a bizarre own goal. United held a point with 1‑1 and thus avoided a new defeat.
Dominance and chances of United
Michael Carrick’s side dominated the first half with 56 % possession and registered seventeen attempts, of which only two were on target. Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Martínez shot without success, while Cunha hit the post. Despite the pressure the score remained at 0‑0.
Fulham also had chances, among others through Sander Berge, Alex Iwobi and Joshua King. Bernd Leno had to early deny a sharp shot from Mbeumo and later make a good save from an attempt by Martínez.
Player performances and reactions
Around the hour mark, Martínez, who tried to collect the ball from Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, accidentally put it into his own net: 1‑0 to Fulham. Gary Neville accused the club of the “worst spell” he had ever seen, referring to the first fifteen minutes after the break.
Just before the end, a shot from Cunha changed direction, hit the post and then rolled in, allowing United to equalise 1‑1. It was Cunha’s first competitive goal of the season.
The player ratings highlighted Leno’s crucial saves, Bassey’s attempt to create the Fulham goal, and Antonee Robinson’s offensive effort that caused defensive problems. Lisandro Martínez received a 7 for his half‑volley that forced Leno, but also for the own goal.
Other notable figures: Calvin Bassey (7), Sander Berge (7), Alex Iwobi (8) and Bruno Fernandes (6). Senne Lammens was praised for his first‑half saves, although his distribution was criticised.
With this point United remain three consecutive league matches without a win, but avoid a third defeat in a row. Cunha’s equaliser gave the Red Devils just that bit of hope for the upcoming fixtures.
