Criticism of Werder Bremen’s transfer policy meets a balanced start

Werder Bremen have tasted a win, a draw and a loss in their opening three matchdays, leaving them with four points in tenth place, while the club’s transfer policy has attracted sharp criticism from supporters and the media.

Mixed results and a calm standing

The defeat, the win and the draw have given the team every possible football emotion in just three matchdays. Four points now sit Werder Bremen on a tenth‑place league position, which the club describes as a quiet starting position. The next Saturday afternoon they will host a traditionally strong FC Augsburg, hoping to build on the modest points haul.

Transfer policy under fire

Many fans had feared a weaker start based on the squad planning and the summer transfers, and they have directed most of the criticism at Werder boss Clemens Fritz. Fritz acknowledged the backlash, saying, “Criticism is part of it, that’s also good. I haven’t seen it as critical as it was made from outside. I’m annoyed about the reporting and felt it was enormously unfair to the team.”

He added that the sporting director also stressed, “We have tried, with the resources we have, to find the best possible solutions for our squad,” and expressed confidence that “more is still in the team once all processes are internalised.” Despite the scrutiny, Werder still relies on a comparatively high number of loan players, a factor that limits future transfer options and the value growth of owned players.

The overarching aim, is to enjoy a calm season far from any relegation battle, turning the early‑season criticism into motivation rather than a sign of impending decline.
