Criticism of Premier Burnham after praise for Manchester City in BBC interview

Prime Minister Andy Burnham came under criticism after he praised the ownership of Manchester City in a BBC interview. Despite the ongoing financial scandal surrounding the Premier League club, in which an independent commission identified over 100 breaches, the politician expressed his public praise.

The independent commission found that Manchester City committed more than one hundred violations of the Premier League's financial rules during the 2009/10 to 2017/18 seasons. The club denies the allegations and must submit an official appeal by this Friday.

The Labour politician served as the mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 until the summer of 2026. His long‑standing connection to the region explains why he highlighted the investments from the United Arab Emirates in particular.

Financial scandal reaches politics

The financial scandal surrounding Manchester City has now also reached British politics, even involving the new prime minister. Burnham had previously publicly praised the City bosses, which is now drawing widespread criticism.

In the BBC interview Burnham praised the owners for their investments in the club, the Etihad Stadium and the city of Manchester. When asked whether he was concerned that the financiers from the Emirates might pull out because of the scandal, he replied: “I would be very worried about losing them.”

Opposition criticises Burnham's praise

The opposition Tory MP Louie French said: “The club is facing unprecedented allegations, and fans are shocked by what they read in the newspapers. Yet Burnham publicly supports the owners even during the investigations.” Liberal Democrat Anna Sabine added: “Fans of all clubs have the right to know that the rules apply to everyone. Burnham must remember that he is prime minister for everyone, not just for Manchester.”

The prime minister's office responded with a statement: “As the prime minister has made clear, the initial assessment is serious and it must not give the impression that anyone is above the rules.” It further stated that the ongoing process must be respected and those responsible for misconduct must bear the appropriate consequences.

With the deadline for the appeal on Friday, it remains to be seen how the process will conclude and whether the political demands for consistent enforcement of the financial rules will hold.
