Coventry’s gamble on 19‑year‑old Cherif from Fenerbahce
19‑year‑old forward Sidiki Cherif has joined promoted Coventry City from Turkish side Fenerbahce on a long‑term deal, after netting two goals in 12 Turkish Super Lig appearances last season. The 19‑year‑old, born in Guinea and raised in France, will add youthful depth to the Sky Blues as they prepare for their Premier League campaign.
From Guinea to the Premier League
Sidiki Cherif, 19, was born in Guinea and moved to France at the age of five. He has represented France at under‑16 and under‑21 levels, reflecting his dual heritage. The forward’s early development in France shaped his technical style.
Cherif made his professional debut for Angers during the 2023‑24 season. He later joined Turkish side Fenerbahce on loan, with an obligation to buy, after impressing at French side Angers. His move to Turkey marked his first experience outside France. He recorded two goals in 12 Turkish Super Lig appearances.
The Sky Blues secured Cherif on a long‑term contract, signalling confidence in his potential. Image source, Coventry CityImage caption, highlighted the signing as a key addition for the promoted club. The deal adds a French‑trained striker to the Premier League roster.
Cherif said, “I’m very happy to be a Coventry City player and I’m excited to be playing in the Premier League.” He added, “I’m looking forward to showing the fans what I can do and to play at the amazing stadium.”
Before arriving at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Cherif featured in the UEFA Europa League and this season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers. Those European outings gave him exposure to high‑level competition. He expressed eagerness to translate that experience into the English game.
Frank Lampard’s busy transfer window
Manager Frank Lampard has overseen a busy window for Coventry, with significant signings such as Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Taiwo Awoniyi. The club also secured the return of Gustavo Hamer, reinforcing the squad across multiple positions.
These acquisitions illustrate Coventry’s intent to strengthen after promotion, competing in the Premier League market despite limited resources. By adding a young talent like Cherif, the Blues aim to blend experience with future potential as they adapt to top‑flight demands.
