Coventry chase second Chelsea star as Lampard eyes Mudryk
Coventry City manager and former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has told Chelsea he is interested in adding a second Chelsea star to the Sky Blues after making an approach for Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk (Picture: Getty). The request comes as the club prepares for its Premier League return following a Championship title.
Lampard is keen to bolster his squad further as Coventry prepares for their return to the Premier League. He wants to strengthen the side before they face Premier League champions Arsenal in their opening fixture of the new season.
Summer signings boost squad
The Sky Blues have already signed Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Lous Tchauouna, Aurele Amenda, Gustavo Hamer, Frank Onyenka and Normal Bassette this summer. These additions show the club’s intent to compete at the highest level after their promotion.
Mudryk's eligibility
Mudryk joined the latter stages of Chelsea’s pre‑season tour after resolving his doping case with the FA. The Ukraine international has not played since November 2024 after a provisional suspension for meldonium, but the FA ended proceedings after he accepted a breach and served a one‑year‑and‑eight‑months suspension.
A loan move is seen as the most likely route for Mudryk to gain regular minutes and regain the form that earned him a £62m move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said he is “very happy” to welcome Mudryk back but it is “too early” to judge his performance levels.
Strasbourg have also shown interest, yet reports suggest Mudryk would prefer to stay in the Premier League if a loan becomes inevitable. His desire to remain in England aligns with Coventry’s ambition to add quality ahead of the season.
Lampard is also keen on discussing a deal for Chelsea academy graduate Josh Acheampong. Acheampong has made 44 appearances for Chelsea since his debut in 2024, including 30 last season, but Chelsea have rejected several approaches so far.
Securing either Mudryk or Acheampong would give Coventry a significant boost as they step up to the top flight, while Chelsea could offload a player seeking regular football. Lampard has indicated he wants a few more signings before the summer window closes, underscoring the urgency of the transfer market for both clubs.
