Cove Rangers face year‑long ban and fine as SPFL sanctions mount
Cove Rangers Football Club have been hit with a season‑long registration embargo by the Scottish Professional Football League, accompanied by a £5,000 fine – £2,000 of which is suspended – after breaching contractual rules. The sanction follows the club’s admission of failing to make a historic payment to a player and providing false information to the league.
The news was first reported by SNS, which posted the update seven minutes ago. The update highlighted the club’s immediate need to explore legal and sporting avenues.
Rule breaches and imposed penalties
The SPFL said the club admitted failing to make a historic contractual payment to a player when due and then failed to notify the league that it was in default of that rule. It also found the club had supplied incorrect information, claiming no overdue payables to current or former players as at 31 January 2026.
Following these breaches, a tribunal imposed a registration embargo that will remain in force until 31 May 2027. The club was also fined £5,000, of which £2,000 is suspended.
Cove Rangers have now settled the outstanding amount, making full payment to the player involved. The payment resolves the historic contractual dispute that triggered the sanctions.
Paul Hartley’s side sit second bottom of Scottish League One, a point above Queen of the South after collecting five points from their opening eight fixtures. The club’s poor start adds pressure as it navigates the registration ban.
"Cove Rangers FC acknowledges the SPFL’s decision concerning a historic contractual payment from 2024 and subsequent reporting matters," the club said. "The club is disappointed by the severity of the sanctions and is carefully reviewing the decision and considering all available options."
