Court appearance sees Nathaniel Mendez-Laing deny assault charge
Former Premier League winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, 34, who now plays for MK Dons in League One, appeared in Cannock magistrates' court on Friday 11 September 2026 and denied a charge of assault by beating his wife Saira, an incident alleged to have occurred in June.
Court details and bail
He arrived on crutches, dressed in a black suit and white shirt, and during the hearing only confirmed his name, age and address. The magistrates' court, located in Cannock, heard him deny one count of assault by beating. District Judge Joseph O'Connor granted conditional bail and scheduled a trial for next January.
Career and international profile
Police arrested Mendez-Laing after a call to their Shenstone, Staffordshire home and the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge in August. He faces the charge of assault by beating, a serious allegation that has drawn significant media attention.
MK Dons have issued a statement saying they will not comment on the ongoing legal proceedings. The club reiterated its support for the player’s right to a fair process.
Mendez-Laing made 20 Premier League appearances for Cardiff City, contributing four goals and one assist, before moving to the Dons from Derby County last summer. His career also includes spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Peterborough, Sheffield United, Portsmouth, Shrewsbury, Cambridge United, Rochdale, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.
Born in Birmingham, he represents Guatemala internationally, qualifying through his mother and grandmother, and has amassed 20 caps for the Central American nation. He previously featured for England U17s before opting for Guatemala.
The midfielder married Saira in June last year; the Dons posted a congratulatory message on their social media channels after the wedding. Their union was celebrated publicly before the legal issues emerged.
