Corinthians gamble on Seedorf, the Milan legend, to dodge relegation
On a bright Sunday morning at Corinthians' training ground, 50‑year‑old Clarence Seedorf stepped onto the pitch, his arrival announced on the club’s social channels as a bid to steer the team away from the drop zone.
Playing pedigree and coaching résumé
Seedorf is the only player to have lifted the European Cup with three different clubs – Ajax in 1995, Real Madrid in 1998 and AC Milan in 2003 and 2007 – and finished his playing days at Botafogo in Brazil.
His managerial career has been brief: three club spells, including a 2014 stint at AC Milan, each lasting under six months, and a 2018 spell at Deportivo de La Coruña. The last time he coached was more than seven years ago with the Selección Nacional de Camerún.
Corinthians’ situation and contract details
Corinthians, sitting 16th in the 20‑team Brazilian top flight – just one place above the relegation zone – dismissed Fernando Diniz on Wednesday after seven straight league defeats.
The club announced on social media that it offered Seedorf a contract running until the end of next year, and the news was also added as a preferred source on Google.
Among the players Seedorf will inherit are Dutch striker Memphis Depay and midfielder Zakaria Labyad, both of whom have been linked to the national team debate.
Depay has recently accused the club of breaching a renewal agreement, adding tension to Seedorf’s early days in charge.
The Dutch football association (KNVB) now faces a potential conflict, as Seedorf has sat on its supervisory board since 2023, handling technical football matters and taking part in talks with candidate national coaches Xavi and Michael Reiziger.
The KNVB will decide shortly whether a double role – board member and club coach – fits within its policy, echoing past instances where officials combined domestic duties with overseas advisory posts.
