Turning point after cup final

‘That caused a lot of controversy and in the new season it had consequences. I kept getting yellow cards faster, even when nothing was wrong,’ Goes explained. He said the pattern affected his confidence on the pitch.

During that period Maarten Martens, the then coach, substituted him more often. ‘Because I had a yellow or sometimes didn’t play well. Martens said I often helped the team but it was too often working against us,’ he recalled.

Goes said he reflected during the winter break and realized a change was needed in his play and mindset. He hired a personal coach and made meditation a key part of his routine.
