Controversy fuels Wouter Goes’ self‑reboot after cup final loss

Update: In the wake of AZ defender Wouter Goes’ controversial behaviour, the former cup‑final loser reflected on a turning point that came after the 21 April 2025 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles, saying the episode sparked criticism and a surge of yellow cards.

Simon Zwartkrui reported that the VIHet behaviour of Wouter Goes generated a lot of controversy and criticism. The AZ-verdediger has begun working on himself and spoke with VI about a new mode.

Turning point after cup final

Voor Goes the turning point arrived after AZ’s loss in the cup final to Go Ahead Eagles on 21 April 2025. The defeat prompted him to reassess his on‑field conduct.

‘That caused a lot of controversy and in the new season it had consequences. I kept getting yellow cards faster, even when nothing was wrong,’ Goes explained. He said the pattern affected his confidence on the pitch.

During that period Maarten Martens, the then coach, substituted him more often. ‘Because I had a yellow or sometimes didn’t play well. Martens said I often helped the team but it was too often working against us,’ he recalled.

Goes said he reflected during the winter break and realized a change was needed in his play and mindset. He hired a personal coach and made meditation a key part of his routine.

En VI PRO offers further insight into his new mode, career plan, his approach to books versus social media and his activities harvesting with youth friends at AZ.
