Conte's vision for United clashes with Carrick's mounting pressure

Conte's vision for United clashes with Carrick's mounting pressure

Antonio Conte stood beside a Manchester United badge, his eyes fixed on a club he described as having “lost sight of their history”. He confirmed his desire to restore the Red Devils, a statement that arrives as speculation swirls that he could replace Michael Carrick as head coach.

United’s recent slump

Manchester United entered the international break having won only one of their previous five matches. The run included a derby defeat to Manchester City, a League Cup exit at the hands of Brighton, and a 1‑1 draw with Fulham that was rescued by an 89th‑minute strike from Matheus Cunha.

Gary Neville branded United’s lack of effort before the Fulham goal “an absolute disgrace”. The Brighton loss was especially painful, marking the first time in fifty years that United had surrendered a 2‑0 lead at Old Trafford.

Conte’s critique of English spending

In a new interview with The Athletic, Conte warned that “in England today they’re using bazookas, while everywhere else they’re still using a pistol”. He stressed the need for clubs to spend money wisely, arguing that having the right vision is essential when the finances are available.

He added that a club whose history “speaks for itself” must honour that legacy by fighting for trophies, not merely taking part. “You must carry in your heart, and instil in the hearts of the fans, your players and your directors, that spark, that hope that makes you say, ‘F**k, we can win’,” he said.

Potential rivals for the job

Italian source Calciomercato reported on 23 September that United chiefs have placed Conte at the top of their shortlist to replace Carrick. Eddie Howe and Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler have also been linked with the vacancy.

Hurzeler, the 33‑year‑old German, has earned praise for his hard‑working players and attractive style, but Brighton could demand a £10‑15m fee to release him. Howe, meanwhile, is a free agent and may become United’s alternative if the price tag proves prohibitive.

United confirmed on 21 September that Carrick remains safe in his role, as no contact has been made with any potential replacements. However, should the 45‑year‑old overseer witness a further decline this season, the club is expected to reconsider its options.
