Conditional fine of 150,000 francs for Swiss captain Xhaka

On Thursday 8 October 2026, Swiss record international and national team captain Granit Xhaka received a conditional fine of 150,000 Swiss francs for the use of forged coronavirus certificates, according to a ruling by the Swiss judge. The penalty will only be activated if he commits another offence within two years.

Conditional fine and conditions

The fine amounts to 150,000 Swiss francs, roughly over 160,000 euros. Xhaka explained on social media that the penalty will not take effect as long as he does not commit any new offences in the next two years: “The penalty will not become effective if I do not commit any new offences in the next two years.”

In an Instagram‑story, the Sunderland player confirmed that a judge had sentenced him to 50 daily fines of 3,000 franc each, also under a suspensive condition. He added that the legal costs have already been paid.

Honesty about the coronavirus certificates

Last month, Xhaka admitted that in 2021 and early 2022 he had contracted a coronavirus infection, but obtained a certificate from a doctor without being vaccinated. He had previously stated that he had made a full confession to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The 33‑year‑old midfielder, who currently plays for Sunderland, is also the captain of the Swiss national team.

Sporting and federation response

Because of the scandal, Xhaka missed the recent Nations‑League matches, and it is still unclear whether further sporting consequences will follow. The Swiss Football Association indicated that it has taken note of the judicial ruling and that it can now engage in the previously announced discussion about the joint future.

With 152 caps, Xhaka is the most capped player in Swiss history, a status that is now under pressure.

Overview of sport categories

The news appeared in a roundup that was placed under the sections Football, Tennis, Formula and Programme. The term Gran also appears in the headline, while Granit Xhaka remains the central figure.

The association will speak with Xhaka in the coming weeks about possible disciplinary measures and his role within the national team. All parties hope that the case can be concluded without further disruptions.
