Concussion prevents Victor Froholdt from facing Manchester City
Victor Froholdt, Danish midfielder of FC Porto, will miss the dragons' first Champions League clash against Manchester City, after spending the night under observation in the hospital in compliance with UEFA's protocol for brain concussions.
The injury was confirmed for FC Porto's first Champions League match, against Manchester City. The club announced that the Danish midfielder will not be available for the game.
The injury occurred in FC Porto's latest match against Moreirense, when a violent clash with Guilherme Liberato left Froholdt immediately unconscious on the pitch. The medical team intervened quickly and sent the player to the hospital.
Concussion suffered in the duel against Moreirense
The diagnosis was a brain concussion, which forced the athlete to spend the night hospitalized under observation. UEFA and FIFA's protocol for concussions mandates the player's exclusion until he is cleared.
Froholdt was taken to the hospital shortly after the incident and is expected to be discharged during the morning of this Saturday, according to club information. Until then, he will remain under medical care.
Although FC Porto announced that the midfielder is fine and that examinations showed no abnormalities, UEFA's medical regulations prevent his participation in the dragons' next game. The decision strictly follows athlete safety rules.
FC Porto's coach will have to reorganize the midfield for the clash with Manchester City, while Froholdt awaits clearance to resume training.
