Como backs striker Roberta Picchi with new deal amid treatment

Italian club Como have rewarded forward Roberta Picchi with a new deal until the end of the 2027/28 season, announcing the extension on Monday after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The 34‑year‑old striker had just helped the side win promotion to the top tier of women’s Serie A.

Why Picchi remains central to Como’s plans

Picchi’s goals were pivotal in securing Como’s first‑ever promotion to the top tier of Italian women’s football. The club now faces its opening women’s Serie A fixture against AC Milan on 26 September, a match that will test the side’s attacking options without her.

Club’s extended support and contract details

In a statement, Il club confirmed the contract runs to the close of the 2027/28 season as part of its “continued commitment” to the player. "Roberta will now begin her treatment, supported throughout by the club’s medical team, who will work closely with the specialists responsible for her care," the club said. It added that everyone at Como 1907 should respect her privacy while she focuses on recovery.

Picchi posted on social media that “nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate. It’s time to play my match, but I’ll be back even more determined.” She will begin her therapeutic programme with the club’s medical staff alongside specialist care.

Federica Cappelletti, president of Serie A Women, praised the gesture, saying “There are gestures that tell the true value of sport more than any result. The choice of a club to renew for another year the contract of a footballer who is facing a health problem and needs protection but especially closeness is a gesture that deserves to be highlighted.”

El Como club reiterated its support as Picchi embarks on treatment, asking fans to respect her privacy. While she concentrates on recovery, the women’s side will open the Serie A campaign against AC Milan, and the club’s men’s team, managed by Cesc Fabregas, recently secured a Champions League place, underscoring Como’s broader ambition.
