Como 1907 signs BVB flop Yan Couto – transfer profit for Dortmund

DeFodi Images/GettyImages – The 24‑year‑old Brazilian Yan Couto left BVB in early August 2026 heading for Italy, which caused a great disappointment in Westphalia. The right‑back, signed in summer 2025 from Manchester City for a hefty €20 million, had never gone beyond the role of a regular backup at Dortmund.

In Dortmund’s squad he remained behind first‑choice right‑back Julian Ryerson, despite showing good signs. Getting past Ryerson proved impossible despite his efforts, so after 62 competitive matches, three goals and four assists he pulled the plug.

Financial Details of the Loan

Como 1907 already paid a fixed loan fee of around €3.5 million and takes over the full annual salary of about €5 million. In addition, the Italian top‑flight club secured a purchase option worth €22 million, making the transaction a clear transfer profit for BVB. INA FASSBENDER/GettyImages reported that the loan was constructed to be financially extremely lucrative for Dortmund.

Strong Start in Italy

Under Como manager Cesc Fàbregas the wing‑back started in the starting eleven for the first three league games and collected seven points. In the 4‑1 victory over CFC Genoa last Friday he delivered a fine lofted pass that set up Nico Paz for the 3‑1 goal, and only narrowly missed the far corner with a glancing effort.

Outlook on Possible Purchase Option

Given his strong performances, it is likely that Como will exercise the €22 million purchase option in the summer. For BVB this would mean that, together with the saved wages and the loan fee, it generates a hefty profit. In addition, Dortmund has secured a resale clause.

The combination of loan fee, wage takeover and potential sale price relieves the BVB budget massively and could turn the initial disappointment in Westphalia into a financial happy ending. Thus, a step initially planned as damage control becomes a genuine win‑win deal for both parties.
