Colombia’s first Libertadores clash after quake sparks hope in Ibagué
A week after a magnitude‑7.4 earthquake devastated parts of Colombia, football returns on Tuesday 18 August as Deportes Tolima host Independiente del Valle in the first‑leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16 at Ibagué’s historic Manuel Murillo Toro stadium.
The search for the bodies of those killed continues, with EFE reporting an official toll of 304 dead, almost 4,000 injured and at least 143 missing. Sport was suspended nationwide after the quake, which hit the departments of Chocó, Caldas, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca, as well as the city of Cali. The disruption left clubs and fans waiting for clearance to resume competition.
International fixtures reshuffled
CONMEBOL had to re‑schedule matches for its continental tournaments. The Copa Sudamericana tie between River Plate and Independiente Santa Fe was moved from Wednesday 12 to Wednesday 19. Similarly, the Libertadores round‑of‑16 encounter between Tolima and the Negriazul side was set for 18 August.
The game will be played at the Manuel Murillo Toro stadium in Ibagué, another city affected by the tremor. Although several buildings suffered damage, local authorities confirmed no deaths or injuries in Ibagué. The home side asked supporters to bring food, water, hygiene products and other essentials, which will be distributed to those impacted by the emergency.
Teams' form and match stakes
Deportes Tolima returns after ten days without an official match. Before the pause the side recorded four victories and two defeats in six games this semester, indicating a solid, if uneven, rhythm.
Independiente del Valle arrives on a 13‑game winning streak across all competitions. Managed by Joaquín Papa, the Ecuadorian club currently leads the LigaPro and will look to extend its run in Colombia.
Coach Papa may line up regular starters Aldair Quintana, Juan Viacava, Jordy Alcívar and Carlos González. Paraguayan forward Carlos González has already netted six goals in this edition of the Libertadores, making him a key attacking threat.
The winner of the tie will move on to the quarter‑finals, where they will face the victor of the Flamengo‑Cruzeiro clash, which ended 1‑1 in the first leg.
Deportes Tolima’s announced lineup features Miguel Ortega; Cristian Arrieta, Jan Angulo, Yordan Osorio and Junior Hernández; Homer Martínez, Sebastián Guzmán, Luis Sánchez, Kelvin Flórez; Adrián Parra and Jorge Cabezas Hurtado, under coach Sebastián Oliveros. Independiente del Valle will start Aldair Quintana; Daykol Romero, Andy Velasco, Juan Viacava, Layan Loor; Jordy Alcívar, Hugo Quintana, Ronald Briones; Aron Rodríguez, Emerson Pata and Carlos González, coached by Joaquín Papa.
