Cologne's price tag stalls Dortmund's Said El Mala chase
Borussia Dortmund (BVB) tabled a reported €42 million bid, including bonuses, for winger Said El Mala last week, but the Billy Goats of 1. FC Cologne swiftly rejected the offer, insisting their €50 million valuation was non‑negotiable. The German side hoped the deal would strengthen their attacking options.
Sky Germany reported that Dortmund’s proposal consisted of €26 million guaranteed and €16 million in potential bonuses, of which €8 million was deemed realistically achievable and the remaining €8 million unrealistic. The structure aimed to bridge the gap between the clubs’ valuations, a topic that resonated throughout Germany.
Cologne placed a €50 million price tag on the winger, meaning the €42 million package fell short. The shortfall reportedly irritated the club’s hierarchy.
Sporting director Thomas Kessler made clear he would not allow his prized asset to leave after a breakout campaign that attracted interest from several top clubs. He emphasized the player’s importance to Cologne’s future plans.
Said El Mala expressed a desire to join Dortmund, and head coach René Wagner praised his professional conduct throughout pre‑season training. Wagner highlighted the winger’s work ethic as a model for the squad.
The 23‑year‑old is noted for excellent dribbling and playmaking skills. In his debut season he logged 34 league appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists.
Observers have questioned why he has not earned a call‑up for the German national team despite his impressive displays. His performances have sparked debate among pundits across Germany.
The rejection means Borussia Dortmund must look elsewhere for a winger, while Cologne retain a key player to build on his strong inaugural campaign. Both clubs now face strategic decisions as the transfer window progresses.
