Cologne's derby hopes dim as Dallinga and Ache both ruled out

1. FC Köln have suffered a double striker injury blow ahead of a crucial Bundesliga derby, as both Thijs Dallinga and Ragnar Ache were forced off during Saturday’s international‑break friendly against Viktoria Köln. The 26‑year‑old Dallinga sustained a cruciate‑ligament tear that will keep him out for several months.

Double striker injury

Both players left the pitch within ten minutes of each other. Dallinga required treatment after hurting his knee in a penalty‑area situation and was eventually helped off. Ache came on in the 35th minute, only to limp off ten minutes later with a thigh muscle problem, remaining in the dressing room at halftime.

Cologne confirmed on Saturday evening that the 26‑year‑old has torn a cruciate ligament and will be sidelined for several months. The club described the injury as the most serious concern among the two setbacks.

Ache, aged 28, suffered a muscular injury in his thigh and is also ruled out for the time being. The forward’s absence compounds Cologne’s attacking problems at a difficult stage of the season.

Dallinga arrived on loan from Bologna ahead of this campaign and made an immediate impact, scoring twice on his Bundesliga debut against Hoffenheim after coming off the bench. He later missed a penalty in a 1‑1 draw with Werder Bremen and failed to convert a clear chance in the defeat to Hamburg, yet had already established himself as a legitimate competitor for Ache’s starting spot.

Ache played an important role for Cologne throughout last season, developing into one of the club’s most dependable attacking weapons after an initial period of adaptation to Bundesliga level.

Derby and cup challenges

The timing of the injuries is particularly unwelcome as Cologne return from the international break with an October 11 derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach, followed by fixtures against Eintracht Frankfurt and newly promoted Schalke, before a DFB‑Pokal tie with Union Berlin later in the month.

Marius Bülter, the 33‑year‑old who scored Cologne’s equaliser in the 2‑2 draw with Viktoria, appears the most obvious short‑term solution. His extensive Bundesliga experience in both central and wide roles may see him fill the vacancy, while head coach René Wagner could be forced to rethink the team’s attacking structure until Ache’s recovery becomes clearer.
