Cody Gakpo remains doubtful for Liverpool‑Fulham clash after missing training
Ahead of the Premier League duel against Fulham at Anfield this weekend, Liverpool Dutch international and the Oranje international Cody Gakpo remains a question mark, as manager Andoni Iraola reports that he did not train yesterday. At the same time, he reports that Bradley Barcola, who had to be taken off after about an hour against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League (2‑1), is available again.
Gakpo and Barcola: fitness in doubt
Iraola indicated that the club still has to assess whether Gakpo is ready for the match, after the striker did not train yesterday. “As for Cody, we’ll see,” said the manager, adding that they will test today whether he is fit for tomorrow or if they have to wait until next time.
Bradley Barcola had to leave the field after about an hour of play against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League (2‑1) due to cramps. Iraola, however, stated that there is no injury and that Barcola, despite muscle soreness, should be available for the match against Fulham.
Iraola's view on Liverpool and the Fulham challenge
The squad trains Friday afternoon and will then decide whether Gakpo can start against Fulham, or whether he can only be used in the Carabao Cup match against Tottenham on Tuesday. Iraola emphasized that the squad remains flexible and that the decision depends on the players' physical condition.
Iraola praised the early games in which Liverpool won once and drew twice, but noted that the team was a goal behind in three of the four matches. He called for more efficiency and a better start, so that the squad does not fall behind the tempo.
He also praised the progress of Alexander Isak, who is physically in a good position, and of Lewis Koumas, who, according to him, can play in various positions and has already scored goals. Additionally, he indicated that there is a chance the injured Hugo Ekitike could return for the last two group matches of the Champions League, although it is still too early to speak definitively about this.
Regarding Fulham, Iraola noted that the club has not yet earned a point, while the statistics would suggest they should have four or five points. He described their play as possession‑based and comfortable, but emphasized that Liverpool must anticipate this. Live commentary on the match will be available later.
