Coach accepts BVB star Sabitzer's surprising career decision

Marcel Sabitzer, a 32‑year‑old Austrian international with 102 caps, has agreed with coach Ralf Rangnick on a one‑year break from the Austrian FA team. The BVB star, active at Borussia Dortmund since the summer of 2023, keeps his return for the coming year open. The decision follows intensive talks and represents a significant career step.

Career at Top Clubs of the Bundesliga

Sabitzer is one of the best‑known faces of the German Bundesliga. In his career he has played for the major top clubs of the German top tier: RB Leipzig, FC Bayern Munich and, since the summer of 2023, Borussia Dortmund. The source is Alexandre Simoes/GettyImages.

The midfielder has decided to take a break from the national team and keep his future in the Austrian FA selection open. In trusting talks with Rangnick it was agreed that he will only discuss a possible return and involvement in the European Championship qualification at the beginning of the new year.

Sabitzer justified his choice with the words: “I am 32 years old, want to play football at the highest level for a few more years and must manage my energy carefully.”

With 102 caps he is fourth on the list of Austrian record internationals. Only one more game is missing for him to equal the former Austrian FA and Bundesliga icon Andreas Herzog.

Coach Ralf Rangnick showed full understanding for the temporary decision. He emphasized that Sabitzer will be available again at any time if the national team needs him.

Rangnick will announce the squad for the upcoming international break on Monday and will not include Sabitzer. The break will remain in effect until then.

The open perspective leaves room for a possible comeback that could be significant for the Austrian national team.
