Club Brugge aim to offload Nilsson if Berlin reach Bundesliga
Club Brugge have confirmed that Swedish striker Gustaf Nilsson has no future at the Belgian side, as his season‑long loan at Hertha Berlin will only become permanent if the German club secures promotion to the Bundesliga, triggering a €2 million purchase option.
Loan terms and promotion clause
Nilsson, the Suédois striker, is on loan at Hertha Berlin en Allemagne until the end of the season. The agreement contains Une condition bien précise: the German club must secure promotion to the Bundesliga for the €2 million purchase option to be activated. Les conditions sont claires et dépendent de la montée.
Both the Club Brugge no longer sees Nilsson in its plans, and his contract runs until June 2028. Both the club and the player have expressed a desire for Hertha to reach the top flight.
Nilsson arrived at Club Brugge in the summer of 2024 for €7 million from Union Saint‑Gilloise, and Transfermarkt values him at €1.8 million, meaning Brugge risk losing several million euros if the option is not exercised.
Financial stakes and future prospects
His salary is high and forwards Nicolo Tresoldi and Romeo Vermant have moved ahead of him in the pecking order. A permanent move to Hertha would therefore be a sensible solution for the Belgian side.

Gustaf Nilsson said, “À mon avis, l'objectif principal est que le club retrouve la Bundesliga à terme.” He added that a promotion would allow him to stay in Berlin.
Hertha coach Stefan Leitl praised Nilsson, stating, “Il correspond parfaitement à notre profil, c’est le joueur que nous recherchions. Il possède une grande expérience et apporte une grande qualité.” The presence of several Scandinavian players, “La présence de quelques joueurs scandinaves facilite son intégration,” has helped him settle.
Nilsson could earn his first appearance on Sunday at 13:30 against Osnabrück. He has not yet featured in a competitive match for Hertha, but his early training sessions have impressed the coaching staff.
At Club Brugge he recorded 11 goals and five assists in 53 matches. He was part of Sweden’s squad at the 2026 World Cup but only played five minutes, entering in the 89th minute against France, a match the French won 3‑0. Su is the French abbreviation used for Sweden in the report.
