Clearlake gains control of Chelsea after Boehly and Walter sell stakes
Chelsea announced on Wednesday evening in a statement that Clearlake Capital has taken over the remaining shares of Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, thereby gaining full control of the club; Boehly is also stepping down as chairman after a lengthy discussion.
By purchasing the respective shares of Boehly and Walter, Clearlake now holds 100 % of the shares; previously the company already owned 61,5 % and Boehly, Walter and Hansjörg Wyss each held 12,8 %.
Leadership in Transition
Todd Boehly is leaving the position of chairman, while Mark Walter and Jonathan Goldstein are stepping down from the board; Ben Jacobs said that currently no successor for the chairmanship is planned.
Hansjörg Wyss remains part of the ownership structure and his share is expected to increase slightly as part of the transaction.
Continuity in Sporting Direction
The change ends the configuration that has existed since 2022, when Boehly, Walter, Wyss and Clearlake jointly took over the club from Roman Abramowitsch.
Ben Jacobs emphasized that the sporting strategy remains unchanged, and Xabi Alonso and the recruitment team receive full support from Clearlake.
Investments for the Future
Chelsea aims to continue playing regularly in the Champions League and competing for the major trophies, with the existing transfer model being maintained.
The club plans to invest heavily in young talents with great potential while also signing experienced professionals.
Clearlake also announced further investments in infrastructure, player development and sporting success, without expecting abrupt operational changes.
