The American billionaire businessmen were among the investors who teamed up with Clearlake to purchase the club from Roman Abramovich in a UK government‑mandated sale in May 2022. Prior to the latest deal, private equity firm Clearlake owned 61.5 per cent of Chelsea while Boehly and Walter shared the remainder with fellow investor Hansjorg Wyss.
Ownership transition completed
A statement released late on Wednesday evening confirmed that affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group, LP will acquire the ownership interest of Todd Boehly. The release added that Hansjorg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and that Clearlake will also acquire Mark Walter’s ownership interest, giving it full control of the club.
"The owners have worked together with the shared objective of building a sustainable foundation for long‑term sporting success," the statement said, noting substantial investment across the men’s and women’s senior and youth squads, Cobham training facilities, medical resources, academy development and club leadership.
"It has been an honour to serve as chairman of Chelsea Football Club," Boehly said. "I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the club… I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership."
Behdad Eghbali, co‑founder of Clearlake, added: "Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as chairman. Clearlake has served as Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, and as we move to full control our focus is to continue investing in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development."
Club outlook under Clearlake
The Blues, who appointed Xabi Alonso as manager over the summer, currently sit sixth in the Premier League. The club confirmed that daily operations, leadership and strategic direction will remain unchanged under the new ownership structure.
