Hartlepool United head coach Lee Clark resigns after string of defeats
Lee Clark has stepped down as Hartlepool United head coach with immediate effect following a 3-1 home loss to Worthing, the club's third consecutive defeat and sixth in seven matches. The defeat left the County Durham side entrenched in 18th place in the National League, prompting a chorus of boos from supporters during the game.
Clark, who took charge of the club in the summer after a brief spell at Rotherham United, managed only three wins from nine league fixtures. His tenure has been marked by a prolonged slump that saw the team slide deeper into the relegation zone, despite a takeover by American businessman Landon Smith in January aimed at ending Hartlepool's four-year stay outside the English Football League.
In a post‑match interview with BBC Radio Tees, Clark announced his resignation, stating, "I resign from my position with immediate effect. I wanted to give this club and the fans something to be proud of, what they deserve, but I haven't been able to do that unfortunately."
The former Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham player added, "I was excited to take the job and I wanted to be the man to get them back to where they need to be and deserve to be, but it hasn't worked out."
Hartlepool now face the task of appointing their ninth permanent manager since leaving the English Football League, a search that will be closely watched by a fanbase eager for a turnaround. The club's board has yet to comment on the next steps, but the urgency of stabilising the squad is clear.
Smith's ownership group is expected to move quickly, with insiders suggesting a shortlist of experienced lower‑league coaches is already being compiled. The priority will be to halt the slide and steer the club clear of a relegation battle as the season enters its crucial final third.
