City’s summer exodus and Savinho’s Tottenham move: Maresca’s calm plan
Manchester City have seen Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders leave, while Savinho is on the verge of completing a move to Tottenham, as the club continues a busy week of player sales that has frustrated many supporters and has sparked anxiety ahead of their opening Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.
Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders have already departed Manchester City, and both Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez appear highly likely to leave before the window shuts. Their exits add to a list of fringe players the club has been moving on this week. The departures have heightened anxiety among supporters.
The club’s busy week of sales has frustrated much of the City universe, prompting questions about the squad’s depth. Manchester City’s hierarchy argues that the outflow is part of a broader plan to reshape the roster. The need to replace the departing players with quality reinforcements is now evident.
Clear plan amid departures
Enzo Maresca told the media ahead of the opening Premier League fixture against Bournemouth that he is not worried about how the summer window has unfolded. He said, “No, I’m not worried or concerned. Since day one we’ve known exactly what we need and we are working together with the Sporting Director and the club. It’s 11 days to go and many things can happen.”
Maresca added, “We don’t have minimum or maximum number. Depends a little bit. I said after the last game if we win or lose games we are not going to change our perspective to change our idea of how many we need. We know exactly what we need and how many we need and then we will see.” The quote underscores a flexible target count.
Timing challenges and potential premiums
The World Cup and the subsequent holidays have stretched City’s timeline for signing new players. Maresca admitted the club would have liked all incoming signings completed by now, but that has not happened. As a result, the club may have to pay a premium for its transfer targets.
Maresca wants to assess his squad during the preseason tour of Asia before finalising decisions. He noted that several fringe players have already moved on, with more likely to depart after the tour. The final stages of the summer transfer window are expected to be busy as City seeks to fill the gaps.
Despite the uncertainty, Maresca remains calm, insisting Manchester City know exactly what they have to do before the window closes. He cautioned that if the squad is not properly constructed, the existing angst could intensify once the deadline arrives.
