City's missed chances keep Real Madrid level in Women’s League
Manchester City were held to a 1‑1 draw by Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League at The Joie Stadium last night, sharing the spoils and leaving both sides on two points after two matches in a tightly contested encounter.
Real Madrid opened the scoring chance when Carlotta Wamser lost the ball to Felicia Schröder, whose shot drifted wide. Athenea del Castillo then met a corner with a volley that sailed well off target, and Khadija Shaw fired over before Mary Fowler’s header struck the underside of the bar.
Real Madrid generated another attack as Eva Navarro delivered a ball from the right that slipped behind an off‑side Felicia Schröder. Home keeper Ayaka Yamashita made a crucial save from a deflected Arianna Caruso effort, preventing the visitors from taking the lead. At the opposite end, Shaw’s attempt was blocked before Linda Caicedo broke the deadlock, directing the ball into the far corner past Yamashita.
Second‑half drama unfolds
Following the goal, the Cityzens pressed for an equaliser but Felicia Schröder’s effort flew over the bar. Manchester City responded when Lauren Hemp sprinted into the box, threading a pass to Yui Hasegawa, whose volley missed narrowly.
In the 51st minute, Khadija Shaw restored parity for the hosts, receiving a one‑touch pass from Yui Hasegawa and firing the ball into the back of the net. Manchester City continued to search for a winner, but Hemp’s cross failed to find Shaw as Beth Mead’s header drifted just wide.
Table implications and next fixture
Both sides claimed a share of the spoils, remaining level on two points after two rounds of the competition. Manchester City’s next UEFA Women’s Champions League match is scheduled for Thursday 29 October 2026, when Paris Saint‑Germain visit The Joie Stadium.
