City’s long‑term gamble: locking Gvardiol in until 2031

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Manchester City have moved to cement defensive stability after a season of cup triumphs by signing Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol to a new contract that runs to 2031, reinforcing the squad for the coming years. The club’s aim is to protect the backbone of a side that lifted both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

The summer extension ties Gvardiol to Manchester City until 2031, making him one of the longest‑term commitments in the squad. The deal was announced on the club’s official channels alongside the other renewals.

At the same time, Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov also signed fresh terms this summer, extending their contracts and further solidifying the core that delivered recent silverware. Their extensions were part of a broader effort to retain key talent.

As the FA Cup and Carabao Cup‑winning side, Manchester City are moving to lock in the talent that delivered those trophies, ensuring continuity across the roster. The strategy reflects a desire to maintain the winning formula that has brought success.

Gvardiol arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 and quickly became a regular under Pep Guardiola. His rapid integration highlighted his adaptability to the Premier League.

Since joining, he has logged 122 appearances for the club and contributed 13 goals, underscoring his impact on both defence and attack. These numbers illustrate his importance to the team’s dynamics.

Renowned as an elite ball‑playing defender, Gvardiol can operate at left‑back or centre‑back, giving City tactical flexibility. His possession skills and ability to break lines with forward runs make him a valuable asset in European football.

Speaking to the club’s website, Josko Gvardiol said, “As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted.” He added, “The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one – and the club provide absolutely everything for players. It’s the best club in the world to be at.”

With his future secured, Gvardiol aims to become a leader in Enzo Maresca’s side, hoping to sit alongside Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias and Rodri in the leadership group. His ambition signals a desire to shape the team’s direction.

The long‑term deal provides the club with defensive stability and reflects its broader strategy of tying down key players to sustain success. It underscores Manchester City’s commitment to building a lasting foundation for future campaigns.
