City's early dominance fuels top spot as Villa stumble in opening minutes

Manchester City extended their flawless start to the Barclays Women’s Super League with a 4‑1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, with goals from Jade Rose, Mary Fowler, Amalie Vangsgaard, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp securing the win.

Both sides retained unchanged starting XI's.

Rose opens the scoring

The opening goal arrived in the 14th minute when a Villa clearance fell to Jade Rose, who tapped the ball home. Goalkeeper Okuma could not prevent the strike. The Canadian international celebrated her first goal of the season.

Fifteen minutes later, Mary Fowler doubled the lead, finishing a well‑worked move involving Lauren Hemp and Bunny Shaw. The ball was played into the box and Fowler slotted it past Okuma. The goal pushed City further clear.

Villa responded just before the break, with Amalie Vangsgaard finding the net in the 42nd minute. The No.20 capitalised on a loose ball after a cross from the right. Her goal reduced the deficit to one.

The second half saw City reassert dominance, and in the 73rd minute Bunny Shaw added a third, assisted by Hemp. The Jamaican international's finish sealed the match. Villa's defence, comprising Parker, Patten, Harviken, Grant, Kielland, Kendall, Wilms, Maritz and McAulay, struggled to contain the attack.

In injury time, Lauren Hemp completed the scoring, tapping home a rebound after Shaw's effort. The goal marked Hemp's contribution with an assist earlier. City maintained possession throughout, dictating play.

The win leaves Manchester City atop the Barclays Women’s Super League, two points clear of Chelsea. Aston Villa sit 11th with a single point from two games. Villa travel to Brighton next, while City host Liverpool before a Champions League tie with Bayern. The victory underscores City's early season dominance and keeps them unbeaten.
