City’s 2030 contract gamble aims to end creative drought

Manchester City have locked England midfielder Phil Foden into a new contract that runs to 2030, with a further 12‑month option, at the Etihad Stadium, aiming to fill the creative void caused by injuries and erratic displays over the past two seasons.

The agreement underlines City’s faith in the England international despite two challenging seasons in which injuries and inconsistent form limited his influence, leaving a noticeable creative void the club hopes the extended deal will remedy.

Enzo Maresca, the club’s head coach, sees Foden as a key component of his strategic rebuild, believing the midfielder’s creativity will be central to the team’s evolution.

Foden’s previous contract was due to expire next summer, prompting months of speculation; City acted quickly to secure the 26‑year‑old, extending his stay until 2030 with an optional additional year after several months of negotiations.

After signing, Foden called the extension “a special moment”, saying “Committing my future to City means everything to me. Playing for this club is all I’ve ever wanted to do and it’s always an honour to wear the shirt.”

Having joined the academy as a child, he progressed through the youth ranks, broke into the senior team under Pep Guardiola and became one of the most decorated academy graduates; last season he made 50 appearances across all competitions but was in and out of the starting line‑up as Maresca reshaped the squad.

He missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup, admitting the mental and physical challenges of the past two years affected his performances, yet City remain convinced he can return to his best and become a standout creative player in the Premier League as he enters his peak years.

With Manchester City preparing for another demanding campaign in England and Europe, securing Foden’s future is a crucial piece of long‑term planning, aligning with the club’s ambition to sustain domestic and European success.
