City's £125m midfield overhaul forces Utd to rethink strategy

City's £125m midfield overhaul forces Utd to rethink strategy

Manchester City have poured a joint‑British record £125m into Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, while Manchester United have committed £155m to revamp their own midfield ahead of this afternoon's Manchester derby. The spending contrast sets the stage for a high‑stakes clash at Old Trafford.

City's massive midfield investment

City moved to replace Rodri after his departure, a loss described by former United coach Rene Meulensteen as “extremely difficult to replace”. He added that the club “bought well and replaced him well”, highlighting the arrivals of Elliot Anderson for £116m and Enzo Fernandez for £125m.

The club also secured 18‑year‑old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Morocco for £86m, while saying goodbye to Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez. Enzo Maresca, now at City, knows Fernandez from their time together at Chelsea,

United's shrewd rebuild

United opted for a more measured approach, spending £155m on Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba to sit alongside Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes. Meulensteen praised the overhaul, saying United are “better now than they were a year ago” because the new signings fill key gaps.

He noted that Tielemans brings “Premier League experience and intelligence”, while Mainoo “did very well under Carrick last season”. Baleba is not fully fit yet, so United will monitor his progress.

Meulensteen also warned that United have conceded six goals in 270 minutes this season, averaging two per game, and that defensive solidity remains a concern.

City, by contrast, have won all three of their Premier League games so far, suggesting a strong start under new midfield personnel.

Ahead of the derby, Meulensteen, speaking on Sunday, said it is “a great moment for United to step up, show their teeth, and deliver a convincing performance”. He added a personal bias, predicting a 2‑1 win for United.

Both clubs must now keep their new signings fit; City’s key players need to stay healthy, while United await Baleba’s full recovery before the match at Old Trafford.
