City’s £116m gamble: Elliot Anderson picks Etihad over United
Manchester City have completed a club‑record £116 million transfer for 23‑year‑old England midfielder Elliot Anderson, signing him to a five‑year contract at the Etihad that runs until June 2031, after the player chose the blue half of Manchester over a move to Old Trafford.
United's long‑standing pursuit
Manchester United were among a host of elite clubs that targeted Anderson for midfield reinforcement, with the Red Devils’ interest stretching back over a year. Despite the sustained chase, United opted to overhaul their misfiring attack last summer, spending £200 million on Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. The Old Trafford side’s focus on the forward line left the midfield bid for Anderson secondary.
During a chance meeting on a golfing trip in Portugal earlier this summer, Ryan Giggs tried to persuade the Nottingham Forest star to change his mind and join Man Utd. Anderson later recalled the conversation, saying he laughed, enjoyed the chat and ultimately decided to sign for City. Earlier this week former United defender Phil Bardsley confirmed the encounter, noting that both he and Giggs had attempted to sway the youngster.
City's record fee and midfield plans
Manchester City officially confirmed the £116 million fee, a club‑record, and the five‑year deal ties Anderson to the eight‑time Premier League champions until June 2031. City expect the England midfielder to slot into a midfield alongside Rodri, and he could make his debut in the Community Shield showdown with Arsenal on Sunday. In training, Anderson praised the detail‑oriented approach of Enzo Maresca and expressed eagerness to contribute.
Speaking at a meet‑and‑greet at the club shop, Anderson said, “I’m over the moon. It’s my first day of training today and the lads have welcomed me really well.” He added that winning a trophy in his first week would be “quite good” and that he wants to show what he can do without focusing on the price tag.
The move gives City a high‑profile midfield addition while United miss out on a player they pursued for months. Anderson’s desire to prove himself at the Etihad adds depth to City’s squad, and the Red Devils will have to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield options.
