City hold firm with ten men in Manchester and join Arsenal at the top
Under the lights at Old Trafford, Manchester City faced Manchester United with ten men for more than an hour. Despite Phil Foden’s dismissal in the 23rd minute, the Sky Blues secured victory thanks to Erling Haaland, drawing level with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
Red card and difficult start
In the 23rd minute, Phil Foden was shown a red card after an altercation with Bruno Fernandes. While he was on the ground, Foden reacted by kicking the Portuguese player in the groin, which led the referee to send him off, leaving Manchester United (US) with ten men.
Man United tried to take the lead, but their attempts from Marcus Rashford in the 45th minute and Kobbie Mainoo in the 51st minute hit the posts, leaving the score blank.
Haaland’s decisive goal
The decisive goal came in the 60th minute. Erling Haaland collected a cross from Josko Gvardiol at the far post, saw his initial shot ruled out for offside, then validated after VAR intervention, giving the Sky Blues a 1‑0 lead.
Manchester City nearly doubled the lead when Enzo Fernandez saw his shot deflected onto the post in the 69th minute, and Rayan Cherki was substituted at halftime for Iliman Ndiaye, brought on by Enzo Maresca. In added time, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made an outstanding save to deny a strike from Bryan Mbeumo.
This win marks Manchester City’s fourth consecutive Premier League victory, bringing them level with Arsenal at the top of the table. The Sky Blues have consolidated their position while Erling Haaland maintains his rate of six goals in six matches.
Manchester United remains four points off the summit, keeping pressure on the title race. The derby, marked by more than an hour of play with ten against eleven, highlights the Sky Blues’ resilience and their ability to win despite being outnumbered.
