Christian Wück's squad without Berger, but with six Englishwomen
At the Karlsruhe stadium at 8:30 p.m., the DFB women's national team is waiting after a four‑month summer break for its first test match, but goalkeeper Ann‑Katrin Berger remains sidelined on the coaching staff's instruction. Head coach Christian Wück has named a squad for the home matches against Australia (Aus) and Japan, including six players from England's Women’s Super League and newcomer Baum, who will make her debut in the match against Japan.
New English signings
From England's Women’s Super League come Sjoeke Nüsken (FC Chelsea), Lea Schüller (Manchester United), Vivien Endemann (FC Liverpool), Carlotta Wamser (Manchester City), Selina Cerci (formerly TSG Hoffenheim) and the 19‑year‑old winger Lisa Baum (FC Arsenal). All six were selected by Wück for the two home matches against Australia and Japan.
Lisa Baum, who previously played for Leipzig, receives her first call‑up to the DFB squad and is set to make her debut against Japan. She is the youngest in the squad and brings experience from the English Premier League.
Berger pause and squad leadership
Goalkeeper Ann‑Katrin Berger, who plays for the US club Gotham FC, will sit out the tests against Australia on October 9 (8:30 p.m.) in Karlsruhe and against Japan on October 13 (5:45 p.m.) in Bremen, following an agreement with the coaching team. The DFB announced the decision in Frankfurt am Main.
Returning captain Giulia Gwinn leads the 24‑person squad. The full‑back from Bayern Munich missed the June World Cup qualifying matches against Norway and Slovenia due to a shoulder operation.
Injured centre‑backs Rebecca Knaak (Manchester City) and Kathrin Hendrich (1. FC Köln) are absent. In addition, former Frankfurt player Nicole Anyomi (London City Lionesses) is not in the squad.
“These are exactly the kinds of matches we need to develop the team further and take the next steps,” head coach Christian Wück said.
